Sunrise

Now that I've got a useable passport again, I returned to making a 'grab-bag'.  This is a bag ready to go if you need to take off quickly.  Common reasons are natural disasters like hurricanes (none in the Northwoods), earthquakes (none on the Canadian granite shield), wildfires (maybe but the local DNR guy said we don't have the topography for fires to get too wild), floods (I live at the top of a ridge), or tornados (those we get occassionally), or a Russian or perhaps Zombie invasion.   Turns out the reason you need to quickly leave dictates what sort of things you should take.  The natural disasters are often wide spread and you aren't trying to hide - just survive.  Then websites suggest food and water enough for three days.  If it's a Russian or Zombie attack suggestions change to stealthy, living-off-the-land items such as tarp, rope, and knives.   I don't want to carry a lot w/ me so my bag is ruggedly made but small.  Has a change of clothes, a bottle of water and a energy type bar, medications for a week, toothbrush/toothpaste, cash in small denominations, copies of various documents and my passport.  Includes a flashlight, phone charger, and emergency radio. Then there are the websites that remind you to not forget your pets. Mine are welcome to come w/ me but they'll have to catch their own food.  Fortunately, they've already proven themselves capable of that.

You may want to think about adding in a small backpacking water filter, too. Never know if clean drinking water could be hard to find.
