Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)

I received an absentee ballot request from someone living in another township. Called that township's clerk and asked if it would be OK to hand-deliver it to her. As I left her house, her husband was coming up from the barn. After passing pleasantries about the weather, he asked who I was. I mistakenly said, "Susan Mayer". In a rural community, you should always add your lineage. Something more like "I'm Neil & Irene Mayer's daughter, Susan" would have been more appropriate. But, he knew me anyway - "Some of the Mayer's North of town? Emil Mayer's family?" "Yes", I smiled, "I'm Emil's granddaughter." Just establishing where I fit in the fabric of the community.

Strange, but wonderful that someone still remembers him and would refer to you as being from "Emil Mayer's family"!
