Rural Autumn
I'd decided to pause my garbage pickup January - March of next year. I don't have that much garbage during those months, anything that would stink I already compost, and I've plenty of room to store a garbage bag per week. Also, wouldn't have to drag the bin out of a snowbank each week nor would the garbage company have to stop at the top of my hill during the snowiest time of the year. Considered it a win-win for everyone. I hadn't done this before so called the garbage company help line. The automated message suggested it might be better if I just left my number and someone would call me back in an hour. A nice lady called me back, took down my request and asked if there was anything else. I asked if I could have handled this all on-line and she said I could have if I wanted and, by the way, there was a service fee for pausing service. Turns out to be $10 less than what I would normally pay for 3 months. Reminded me of the last time I made a hotel reservation. I'd stayed at this hotel last year so just booked it again for this year. The cost of the room itself had only gone up one dollar since last year - but there was an additional service fee. I clicked on the "?" next to it and it said it was for the right to have someone live to talk to 24x7. (Makes me want to drop down to the lobby at 2 a.m. and shoot the breeze w/ the desk person.) I believe the term 'Service Fee' means the company has found a way to charge you for nothing.

Agree on the bogus service fee or as some sites say a '"convenience" fee.
