Town Planning commission meeting tonight. Mr. Beebe was first up. He's planning on swapping out the trailer house he currently resides in for a bigger model. Just needed a conditional land use permit and the group voted to recommend the town board OK it. Next up was a couple from Churchtown. They own land at the top of Norwegian Road already. They are retiring this year and moving out to a home they built on the property. They have planted a vineyard there and would like to open up a summer bar where they will have wine, beer, and liquor for sale or consumption on the premises. They are asking the town to rezone their area. The town clerk is looking into all of the requirements for a temporary liquor license but I did a little research out of interest. I can't see how we can grant a license. Temporary licenses are given to organizations, charities, and functions (like a fair) but not to individuals by state law. In 1997 my state decided to take over the handling of liquor permits. Any liquor permit already in existance was grandfathered in. My town had one and it's the same firm that still owns it. Unless we go up by another 500 people (we went down in the last census) we aren't eligible for another license. If a contiguous municipality within 2 miles wanted to sell one to this couple they could but I don't know of any available plus whether it's ours or a transfer the minimum price set by law is $10,000. They also didn't mention what thier insurance company thought of them opening up a temporary bar on-site. I will say these planning meetings are more interesting than the meetings I attended when I worked at Honeywell. At Honeywell we had structure built in so meetings didn't go overtime or off subject which these meetings lack. I can only assume it's the gossip that weaves in and out of our discussion of the issues that adds the spice.
