Bobolink in the field

The library's Summer Reading program began last week.  Lots of little children converging on the library between 6 and 7 p.m. to have a book read to them, do an activity, get a snack.  Before and after that they turn in the books they read last week, check out the books they want to read for the next week, and 'spin the wheel'.  The wheel is like TV's Wheel of Fortune w/ various prizes marked out between the spokes: a book & coupon, a small prize, a medium prize, and a large prize.  There might be more but there are two other volunteers that handle the children doing that while I'm checking in books, checking out books, and putting books away.  Good thing.  I think I'm a bit above average when dealing w/ prepubescents one-on-one but in a group setting not so much.  I did deal w/ a little girl that couldn't find the women's bathroom, an older girl that wanted to order a book from another library but didn't know how nor have her library card.  Even handled the wheel for kids who came in late when the other volunteers were making ice cream cones for the 50 some children that had come to tonight's gathering.  The 7 p.m. closing time stretched out as the little ones made last minute book selections.  Finally I was able to close up and drive home.  In the bottoms on the way home I noticed something dark by the side of the road and slowed.  A mallard duck started it's flat-footed walk across the road way followed obediently by a long line of tiny fuzzy balls doing their upmost to keep up.   I think I could deal w/ children if they were all like that.
