Goldfinches molting

Mother Nature's delivery of last week's 60-70 degree temps was awesome.  Unfortunately the plants also felt the frost go out of the ground, the warm temps, and increasing sunlight.  The lilacs have put out tiny leaves and the red stems of peonies are breaking ground.  Not much I can do for the lilacs but got on-line to see how to protect my fledgling peonies from the coming cold.  Some articles said to cover the plants w/ plastic pails.  Others said not to worry- peonies are used to a little freeze/thaw.  As you can see, the goldfinches look a bit ugly at the moment.  The males are molting from their dull winter greens into brilliant summer yellow.  The earthworms came out of the sodden earth too - much to the delight of the recently arrived robins.  It's started falling back to normal April weather today - but the memory of last week will keep us warm for awhile.
