Ice Bubbles

The news spoke about how young black girls can look up to Ketanji Brown now that she is a Supreme Court judge.  It's a similar line they said about Kamala Harris when she became the first woman vice president and Barak Obama when he became the first black president.  I thought about when I was a little kid.  I don't remember looking for women who were blazing a trail for me.   I believed the hype that I could do whatever I put my mind to - no matter what my sex or ethnicity.    Turned  out it wasn't my will that was ever the issue but the perception of the people around me as to what I should be allowed to do.   It's us - the current working generation that needs to see the Keanji Browns, the Kamala Harris, and the Barak Obama's.  We are the ones to see diversity in our co-woorkers as a plus, our bosses to see the advantages of promoting outside the "good old boy's" network, and our legislature to see the importance of an even playing field.   It's good for the younger generation to have role models but it's more important that by the time those young girls are grown, a diverse workplace is a given.
