Winter Naif

The pastor's sermon was from Mark and topic was healing.  In the passage, Jesus, James, and John all go to have Sunday dinner at Andrew and Simon's house.  Simon's mother-in-law is sick in bed.  They tell Jesus and he lifts her by the hand and she is cured.  Immediately, she begins to make Sunday dinner.  (I'm paraphrasing.)    I stopped listening to the pastor for awhile.  My mind went to the question, "How did women get in this predicament?"  Why can't men make their own meals and why would they let this woman, who had moments before been sick in bed, get up and start serving them a meal?  God  made Eve to be a 'helpmate' for Adam but couldn't she just as easily been the one to name all of the types of animals while Adam watched the kids?   I came back to the pastor's sermon only long enough for him to say "Synoptic Gospels" and my mind was off again trying to remember from college days what that meant.  (Think 'same'.)   The pastor then asked everyone  to turn to Psalm 103 to illustrate a point he'd just made.  There are Bibles available in front of each pew but I prefer to use my own.  Often I like to underline a passage.  When I got to that page, I could see I had already underlined other verses in Psalm 102.  It was a metaphor using birds - "like a pelican of the wilderness ... like an owl of the desert ...  as a sparrow alone upon the house top".  I loved the poetry of it and thought about why those particular species were chosen for this imagery.   When the pastor asked everyone to stand for a last hymn I was surprised.  Sermon went by quickly today.

I usually make the meals for Evelyn cause she is working but when I'm
tired I ask her to make something because it tastes better when she does it. She gives me the look that tells me I ain't fooling her.
