Last year's fawn

I fill the bird feeders every morning.  Birds are very messy and there are seeds all over the ground below the feeders.  I'm assuming that some of them are rejects that the birds picked up and tossed away because the seed wasn't firm enough?  The birds fly off en-masse from time to time and if they have a seed in their beak, maybe they drop it to lighten their load?  Anyway, I've noticed holes in the snow next to the deck and began to worry that all of these extra seeds atop the snow were attracting mice or (shudder) rats that will take up residence under the deck.  The deer came in early last night to clean up after the birds and I watched a doe and last year's fawn digging in the snow to find more seeds.  Thankfully, they were the ones making the holes in the snow.  They pick up seeds at my place and then visit my neighbor's to see what he has to offer.  In the morning they reverse their path and sleep out the day protected deep in the woods.  So far winter hasn't been that bad for them.
