My amaryllis is 13 years old. It's bloomed at least once each year since I bought it as a gift for someone else. I kept it instead of giving it away since by the time I was ready to put it in a package it had already started growing leaves. I think the secret to it's longevity is bad housekeeping. First I lost the instructions for it's care. Then after it bloomed and the leaves died back it looked really bad. Instead of tossing the bulb and dirt, I just placed the plant in my bathroom. It languished there in the dark for awhile until I noticed it was putting out a leaf again. Quite a few times, I thought the plant was dead but each time it rejuvenated. A few years ago I came across the instructions I'd received w/ the bulb and read that I had been doing everything wrong in amaryllis care and feeding. I also have said I need to repot it sooner or later but now I no longer have a choice. I noticed the plant had created a second bulb and now it looks like there may be a third. The issue is that the top of the original hard plastic pot is no longer a circle but an oblong deformed by the outgrowth of the plant. It's amazing.

That's beautiful! I have a Christmas cactus that has also seemed to survive on it's own. Although once when I moved it away from the window, it immediately drooped and looked dead until I moved it back to its window. Then it came alive again and happy. Bless its heart.
