Chrysallis
I have started my Autumn cleanup activities. Along the SE side of the deck are peonies and oriental lilies. I don't take out the foliage until spring. The idea is the dead leaves will catch the snow and make a deeper 'blanket' over the sleeping bulbs/roots of these plants. In the spring when I'm doing cleanup I have something that shows where each plant is and I can look for it reemerging. Peonies are pretty rugged but I've lost some lilies. If a lily didn't come up, I remove the marker as part of my fall cleanup. I lost two lilies this year but when I went to remove a pipe I'd put in as a marker, there was a crysallis hanging from it. I didn't want to disturb it. There might be a few weeks before freezing weather so there is a fair chance the butterfly can still hatch. Just need to remember to remove the marker either yet this fall if he does make it or in the spring when the ground thaws.
