Once we got to the gorge I decided today's walk would be the swamp road. On the way to the swamp road, we have to cross the sphagnum moss swamp and I wandered off the trail to see if I could find any orchids. Didn't take long and I was standing where I could see 5 pink lady slippers - all in bloom. Got a little turned around though and the dog and I spent some time slogging through the swamp. Hadn't realized how deep and wide the water was in places out there. I went in multiple times up to the top of my legs and I was happy that I hadn't worn my hiking boots. It was difficult enough to extricate my legs out of the sucking muck wearing walking shoes. We came across an old fence line. When I was quite young Grandpa had told me to follow a fence line if I didn't know where I was. Sure enough, came out in a glade a little further down the swamp road. After that it was an easy hike back home. My shoes have been through swamp water and slop before so they just need to be given time to thoroughly dry. Didn't bother putting my socks in the wash - they would never be white again. Shucked off the pants and put them in the laundry sink. Checked the rest of my clothes for ticks and found only two. Took a shower and then washed a load of clothes. Feel great - a walk worthy of the name.
