Tree Swallows

Drizzled all day.  As soon as we had gone through the pasture and around a field I headed for the woods.  I looked for plants around the base of trees.  There's less leaves close to the tree trunks and it's easier to find foliage there.   On a cloudy day, the ephemerals are nyctinastic - closing their petals to protect pollen and reproductive organs from cold and rain.  No use searching for them.  Found the first fronds of cut-leaf toothwort, Virginia waterleaf, cowslip, and lake sedge  (it's pretty wet in places).  In springtime, the forest floor is the happening place to be.
