1996 - Prehistoric Animals

If you haven't guessed already, I'm displaying pictures of some of the stamps in my collection.  January and February are hard times of the year to get pics here.  It would be mostly snow photos so instead I pick some theme and attach those pictures during the week.  Weekends will be my usual pictures.   Stamps are becoming less and less important as we e-mail, Facebook, and go paperless.  However, they are fascinating in their variety of subject matter.

These stamps displaying extinct prehistoric mammals of North America were first issued on June 8, 1996.  Interestingly, first day issue was in Toronto, Canada.  Why would a U.S. stamp be initially issued in a foreign country?  Because the World Philatelic Exhibition was being held at that time in Toronto so it was in honor of the meeting of all of those stamp collectors.  27.73 million stamps were printed.  Scott # 3077-80
