Black knot is a fungal disease of cherry and plum trees here. It's got a pretty distinctive look plus this one was cracked and oozing an amber liquid - another sign of the infection. Some trees can handle it; some trees can't. I don't go along the woods and prune out infected trees or branches. It's pretty endemic and fungicide's don't work against it. The wild trees are on their own w/ this one. For the cherry and plum trees in the stockade, I just keep a wide barrier between them and infected trees - made easy since they are located in the middle of a hay field.
