Mountain Mirage
Well, surrounding my home it's more hills than mountains but liked the alliteration. The hill in the distance normally has a gentle slope up and a gentle slope down. The flattened out disk at the top in this picture is actually the inverted image of the top of the hill. Happens because the topography here allows me to see a long distance and this morning there was a temperature inversion - cold air trapped below warmer air. The mirage was formed by light bending differing amounts as it passed through the varying densities of air. While I had breakfast this morning, I watched as the top of the 'mountain' changed shape multiple times. Pretty cool.
