Milk break

Slow night at the library - only 2 patrons came in.  When I took over at 4:30 there was no one in the library but the librarian.  When she left at 5:00 I put a disk from the audiobook I've been listening to in the CD player and listened to that while I put books away, pulled requested books, updated some graphs, and picked out the books which have been sitting on the hold shelf for too long.  If the person who requested the book doesn't pick it up within a week, we take it off the hold shelf and send it back to it's original library.  Tonight there were 15 books on that list.  I had the books piled up on my desk but decided to put off sending them back until just before closing - in case the people requesting them came in.  With 10 minutes left before the library's close time, in walked one woman w/ 30 books to return. (It took her a couple of trips to her car.) Eight of the books I was just about to return were for her.  Took those out of the return pile on my desk and checked them out to her.  She also wanted to pay a fine so got that paperwork completed too.  While I was working on her books, in walked my second patron of the night.  He had 10 books to return.  He ducked into the stacks and came back w/ 11 books to check out. It was well after closing time when I finally was able to lock the doors and go home.  So let me rephrase my first sentence, "It was a slow night but the last ten minutes (and then some) were a bit crazy."
