Joe-Pye Weed (Eupatorium maculatum)
Filled in at the library this afternoon. It was a rainy day and the library was empty. A young girl w/ her even younger brother and little sister came in. Their mother has a booth at the local Farmer's Market and the kids thought it would be more fun to come up to the library for awhile. The boy played w/ cars we have set up in the children's section. The young girl sat w/ her little sister and read her some books. Eventually I heard the young girl say she was tired of reading and she wandered off to find material at her own level. The youngest girl came running up to my desk and asked if I would read her a book. "Sure, go pick out a book and bring it back here." I told her. She ran off and returned almost immediately. "Cats!" she proclaimed to me. There were indeed cartoon cats on the front. The child pushed over a chair. The chair seat was about shoulder height on her and I wondered how she would manage to get on it. She got on it like one gets on a horse - jumping to get most of her body mass atop the seat and then swinging a leg around to finally end up in a seated position ready for me to start. The book only had 8 pages and not a lot of plot. It was a story about different instruments each cat played in a band. The telling of the tale took awhile though. I would read the short text on the page and make the sound of the instrument pictured. She would then mimic me until she could reproduce the sound to her satisfaction. By the third page both her brother and older sister had joined us resulting in a loud cacophony as each page was read. Fortunately we finished before patrons started coming in to look for rainy-weekend entertainment.
