Mowed the lawn tonight though I didn't mow everything. Left a small colony of heal-all on the north side of the lawn. They were just too pretty and too purple to cut. By next week they will be done blooming and I'll mow that area then. Later when I was mowing on a trail I heard frantic peeps and saw a tiny fledgling struggling through the grass ahead of the mower. He may have been a ruffed grouse chick - since he seemed mostly legs - separated from his siblings. I turned off the mower and waited until he snuggled into the tall grass on the side of the trail and carefully went around him. Not that big a deal if the grass in that portion of the trail is longer than the rest. Glad I saw the chick. My hay fields were just cut so any bird still nesting on the ground in them was out of luck. However, I reserve half of my meadow and leave it wild. Next time I wonder if I should let that area be cut also, I'll remember that late season chick.
