Horsehair mushrooms

The former village chairman walked into the library while I was volunteering this morning. Richard moved to New Mexico and was just back for a visit. He copied a few pictures and stopped by my desk to pay. "Do you have change for a $10?" he asked. I knew I didn't. I'd opened up the cash box when I'd arrived and was chagrined to see there were only 4 ones and some loose change. So I wrote out an IOU for the $1 he owed and had him sign it. "If I don't pay, you know you'll have to come to Las Cruces to collect." he laughed. "Might as well stay a few days at the house then." He walked out and I placed the IOU in the cash box. Richard didn't come back to pay before I closed up so I took a dollar out of my wallet, put it in the cash box and pocketed the IOU. Didn't think the librarian would look kindly on my allowing IOUs and, besides, come next January, Las Cruces might start looking pretty good to me..
