Wild Columbine
I needed someone to fill in for me on Saturday at the library. I called the volunteers on the backup and regular list. No one could work. I hadn't called one guy that I knew would be part of a village-wide garage sale this weekend. I can be quite tenacious when in the heat of battle - I called and left him my message w/ the reminder that "he owed me one." (Some months ago, he had called, desperate because he had forgotten that it was his anniversary. and I filled in for him at the last minute.) Indy and I took off for a long walk through the swamps. Walks tend to put things in perspective. It dawned on me that I was basically using coercion on this poor guy. He phoned back and said he figured I wouldn't have called if I wasn't desperate. I thanked him but said not to worry, I'd work it out. I'd resigned myself to not going to the GNO when another volunteer called and asked if I could fill in for her next week, I said sure. As an afterthought (since the librarian had already told me this volunteer was busy over the weekend) I asked if she was doing anything on Saturday. She replied she would love to fill in for me. Some days things just seem to work out.
