Veining black growth on dead tree

I was introduced to the new guy at the dairy.  He worked hard and seemed likeable enough.  However, when it came time to get paid he told the dairy that he had to be paid off the books.  Could mean that he has garnishments on his wages for child support payments, unpaid taxes, or court fines --or-- it could be that he's on disability payments from the government and doesn't want them to know he is able to work.  This isn't the first time the dairy has been asked to pay someone that way.  The dairy's answer is "Paying off the books doesn't work for our business.  You'll have to be paid like everyone else or not at all."  Don't know if I'll be seeing the new guy around again or not.
