Autumn color

Evan, the dairy owner's son, has been touring dairies in the northwest. He came back today and was talking to the herdsman about some of the things he saw. HoJo cows are becoming popular he said. HoJo is the name for a Holstein x Jersey cross. Holsteins are the largest of the milking breeds and are black and white. Jerseys are the smallest and tan and black in color. The resulting cow is smaller than a Holstein so doesn't eat as much but gives milk with a higher butterfat content (which is a factor in the amount paid for the milk). Interesting but the owners aren't planning on making any breed changes since that would require infrastructure changes to the barn. What I didn't hear Evan talk about were robot milkers. Guess I keep my job for a bit longer.
