Fall Phlox

Found Fall Phlox (a/k/a Garden Phlox) growing near the grove yesterday. That area has been pasture land as long as I've been around so I took a picture and sent it in to the Herbarium. Naturalized Phlox have been recorded in other counties in the state but not in mine. The director of the Herbarium asked for some more background on where I found the flowers. He explained that some flowers planted near an old farm house could remain there for a hundred years after the house and farm are gone. They would not be considered naturalized plants since they were purposely planted. My grandmother had a garden but that was maybe 800 feet away where the farm buildings were located. My brother happened to call so I asked him if he had any ideas of how the flowers got there. I finally responded to the Herbarium director and told him (as succinctly as possible) all of the pertinent info of the area where the flowers were located. He got back to me today and said that based on the information I had given, he was counting the flowers as naturalized.

Very pretty! I just bought some hot pink and cotton candy pink Phlox about a month ago. We shall see how they look next year.

NEAT! Yours look just like mine. Two small growths about 1.5 feet tall would appear annually, then get eaten by deer as soon as blooms started (sometimes before). Now I get to enjoy beautiful blooms after moving them "inside" my 5 foot fence...HA!
