The local paper had a letter in it's Opinion Column from a guy who related his experiences in the Korean War stating that's why women shouldn't be in combat. He said "I'd resent some woman ordering me to attack some position when I knew she wasn't capable of doing those things...". He also said he felt the same way about homosexuals in service and that Samoans could easily take over Afghanistan in a month(?). I started writing a letter to him chastising his stereotypes but stopped. This guy probably isn't going to change his mind or listen to "some woman". I thought about when women couldn't vote (men said women weren't educated enough) and when women couldn't serve on juries (men claimed women were incapable of important decisions). As my sister reminded me, most women of our generation have stories of discrimination in the workplace. This morning, the news announced that the Olympic Committee will allow woman's ski jumping. Just a few years ago, women's ski jumping wasn't permited because men thought the jarring landing would cause women to be infertile (however, the sport made men more macho?). There are still places women aren't welcome. Doubt too many women want to become professional football players - think they are too smart to scramble their brains every Sunday. However, a female Pope might be a totally excellant idea.

I could write a book on discrimination in the workplace but most of it happened before I worked for a large company. Of course, we ladies often made fun of some of the men who could not manage to do more than one project at a time...we were handling mutiple assignments. We just assumed their brains were deficient. Maybe they played too much football as youngsters. :-)
