Saw a news article about a town clerk charged w/ theft. That peaked my interest. No, I'm not planning on heisting any money from my township. One of the things I did in my old job was look for ways system controls could be thwarted and make sure they didn't happen. Guess I'm just used to looking for procedural holes. In this news article, the clerk was actually a clerk/treasurer (she did both roles) and she forged the name of the chairman on town checks that were used to pay her personal debts. Error might not have been found until the yearly audit. In our town, we have one person for clerk and another for treasurer and both keep a set of financial books. Our books need to agree each month. The treasurer, the chairman, and I get copies of our monthly bank statement too. Think the town is safe from this same fraud situation. Besides w/ the amount of money the town has, robbing the funds would only amount to a misdemeanor anyway. Hardly worth it.
