Found out that Indy is what is referred to at animal shelters as a BBD - Big Black Dog. These kind of dogs are often passed over in favor of smaller or lighter-colored dogs. One theory is that when a aggressive dog is depicted in films, it's usually a BBD. Another is that because of their lack of color, it's difficult to get a good picture of a BBD. People checking out available dogs on the Internet bypass them. Then there is the thought that people consider a BBD to be too common or ordinary. They want something more unique. I don't know if any of that is true. When I went to the pound, I was looking for functionality - a dog that could walk through the woods and swamps w/ me. The people at the animal shelter first brought out a corgi - cute but built kinda close to the ground. Then they brought out a Manchester terrier puppy - again, cute but would probably be eaten by something the first time we went out. Then Indy came out - just made for taking walks. BBD or not.

I'm not much of a dog person (though I've had 2 in my life) but when I look for a new cat, I want it to be black. That's partially because black cats are supposed to be bad luck and I like to rebel against all things bad luck like walking under ladders, etc... But a black animal is also beautiful and sleek and even somewhat mysterious. Not boring at all in my opinion.
Awwww. Thanks for the compliment, Shelby. We have a solid black cat, Luther. He goes great with our Halloween decorations every year. Ha!
