Wild Columbine

All of my siblings have memories of Memorial Day on the farm. As little kids we "helped" Grandma pick flowers from her garden the night before. The flowers sat in buckets of cold water in the wellhouse overnight and in the morning, we (mostly Grandma) made them into floral arrangements. We rode along keeping the pots from tipping when Grandpa took them to place on the grave sites. Now I'm the grownup and this morning I celebrated Memorial Day by placing flowers in the cemetery. (Live flowers, of course. Grandma would reach a bony arm out of the grave and grab my wrist if I used anything else.)

I remember it was somewhat of a toss-up on which flowers would be ready to go. Peonies, bleeding heart, and lilacs sometimes. Always depended on how cool the weather was in May. Nice that you are carrying on the tradition.

How do you bring peonies into the house while leaving their ants outside? Always wondered how Grandma was able to do that.
