Northern Spring Peeper

These little frogs are pretty recognizable by the "X" on their back and the line between their eyes. (OK, because of the light, you can't see it very well in this picture but that's what you should look for.) They come in all shades of brown from a reddish hue to this light tan color. Only the males make the distinctive high-pitched "peeping" sound as they call out for mates. You don't often think of frogs as carnivores but, of course, they are - eating any insect that isn't bigger than they are. When it gets cold, these little guys go into hibernation and can actually endure some body fluids freezing. That's the extent of my memory dump on Spring Peepers. Think I'll open the windows tonight so I can listen to them.
