Orchid

100 years ago there were lumber mills in the area and roads leading to them. After the trees were removed, farms took over and the mills closed. The town abandoned the roads leading to the mills. There are levels of abandonment. An abandoned road no longer is maintained by the township and they receive no state funds for the road. The town does retain the right to use that access (R/W) though. The town may file with the county to eliminate their rights to the R/W and then the land reverts to the adjacent land owners. I learned all of this stuff when a matter came before the town board. Seems there is no road to 80 acres which a couple just inherited. Their neighbor said he would sell them an easement along an old road R/W thru his land. The couple asked if the town still owned the R/W to that old mill road. Yes, the town never filed with the county. That means the couple has a right to use that access to their land at any time free-of-charge. Now the hard part - the board needs to explain that to their neighbor.
