Sunrise anticipation
My preferred genre for reading is mystery. I read it until I start having nightmares and then I switch to something else for a book or two before going back to mystery. Unfortunately, none of the mystery books I ordered from the library have arrived. They are all new releases and a long waiting list for them. Decided to read a book about witches instead - you know, Halloween is right around the corner. Picked up Circe by Madeline Miller. It came out in 2018 so no longer has a waiting list. Big plus, it's about Circe the sorceress of Greek mythology. Witches and Mythology - what's not to like? The narrative weaves together many of the myths I already know about Circe, her parents Helios and Perce, her siblings Pasiphae, Aeetes, and Perses, her encounter w/ Odysseus, and the uneasy truce between the Titans and Olympians. Even included a couple of myths new to me. Fortunately, I've got the 'Greek Mythology Family Tree' poster pinned to my bulletin board and referred to it a couple of times. (Not sure how someone unfamiliar w/ Greek mythology would keep track of all the players.) Like the Iliad, it's quite gory. Librarian Trevor hinted he'd like all of the volunteers to show up in costumes for Halloween week. I'll go as Circe. Pretty sure in the 21st century she wouldn't still be running around in a toga - think a circlet of leaves and flowers will be apropos. Will check if I've got a toy lion, wolf, or more obviously, a pig around.
