Joe Pye-weed

The local weatherman said there were frost warning for my county tonight.  I've been watching the 10 day forecast lows on my phone and on the computer but haven't seen any temps that low.    Since the National Weather Service took the time to issue me a warning it seemed like I ought to heed it.   Whip and I moved all of the potted plants from the deck to inside Sleipnir for tonight.  The pots are sitting on the floor since the plant tiers haven't been set up yet and I'm pretty sure we will get more warm weather.   I can easily move them back outside if it does warm up.    One reason I'm putting off getting them ready for winter is the alyssum.   Alyssum are my go-to filler plant to put around the base of the geraniums.  They will reliably bloom all summer long and have a faint sweet scent.  My problem is alyssum love the cool weather that comes with autumn.  They have erupted into cascades of white or purple or pink flowers down the sides of the planters.  Alyssum are annuals.  As often as I've tried I can't get them to overwinter.  I've learned it's best to pull them out before putting the geraniums away for the winter 'cause it's even harder to pull their desiccated stems and roots next spring.  It's just that they look so happy right now.  Yggdrasil and the cacti were left outside.  Those are plants that a light frost won't effect.
