Eastern Phoebe
I wanted to attend the Town Meeting last night so I could pick up my check for participating on the Zoning Committee Meetings but mostly to pick up gossip about the neighboring Town of Stubbs' on-going issues. I want to understand why a rural community can't communicate civilly. This is government by the people at it's most basic. Figured our Town Board might have some insights on what was going on next door. I had to shut down the library first so I was about 10 minutes late when I walked into the town hall and the board was discussing road work. Funny, road work is usually the last thing on the schedule. Ahhh ...the Packer game would be televised tonight. Sure enough, a minute or so later the supervisors made a motion to adjourn and the meeting was over in record time. Since they were finished I spoke up and asked the board what they knew of the goings on in Stubbs. Chairman Steve said "Read the paper." He had the latest copy on the table next to him and there was a half page article about the most recent Town of Stubbs' Special Board Meeting where a sheriff's deputy was called out (again) to keep the peace. This is the fourth week that the paper has reported on a contentious meeting there. The reporter ended the article w/ "Check back with future issues for continuing coverage of the ongoing conflict between the Stubbs board members and residents." so it sounds like nothing got resolved. People broke off into different conversation groups and I didn't get anymore info on Stubbs. Funny, the guys will babble about all sorts of local rumors. Show interest in gossip and suddenly they won't spill.
