Emerging Ferns

Whip was jumping up and down on me, tongue lolling out, eyes bright. Even if she can't talk, her meaning was plain.  She wanted a walk!    Before going out I fastened the shock collar on her.  It's the beginning of fawn season and does like birthing/hiding fawns in the meadow by the house.  Temp in the 80's but a pretty breeze and there is something new in bloom each day - spring walks are wonderful.  Whip was in and out of the tall grass smelling and chasing things invisible to me.  I was getting closer to home and hadn't seen Whip for awhile.   I whistled for her and then hit the 'buzz' on the shock collar.  She usually comes immediately but not this time.  I stopped two more times on my way home and buzzed her but she wasn't to be seen.  The collar has close to a mile range so I was fairly certain Whip was getting my message.  I rounded the corner of the house to the front door and there, sitting in the lawn as if waiting to greet me, was ...Blitzen?  At the sight of me I think she realized she was where she shouldn't be and ran back through a wide open front door.  Dunder was just inside the door.  Out of the living room came Whip, panting like she'd been running.  I figure it like this.  Whip heard my first buzz but instead of going on down the trail toward me, she raced home via the path we'd come.  Either she didn't realize I wasn't home yet or just figured I'd show up there sooner or later.  She knows how to open the front door on her own.  She came in the house in case I was inside waiting for her.  Can't fault her logic.  I told her what a smart dog she was and gave her a couple of treats.
