Barn Quilt
Librarian Colby is still on duty but she said her replacement has been picked and his name is Trevor. She has us all busy pulling books which haven't been checked out in some time. Tonight she said the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) supervisor for the area would be coming in for a celebration of Aldo Leopold Week. My state started out celebrating ecologist Aldo Leopold Day, which then became a weekend, and now is celebrated for a full week. The meeting will be centered around Aldo Leopold's book 'A Sand County Almanac'. They read portions from the book and discuss conservation issues. At 6 p.m. the DNR guy and group arrived and set up at the back tables. Colby decided to join them. I stayed busy but, in order to not bother them, I only pulled books from the Over Sized section which is near the front. At 7 p.m. I walked down to where the group was and let them know the library would be closing. Colby said they had decided to stay an extra 1/2 hour and to sit down and join them. Didn't I say that the librarian makes the rules in the library? It was partially that and partially the homemade oatmeal cookies the DNR guy had brought that caused me to sit down and join the group. It's been years since I read Sand County Almanac but remembered most of it. After some discussion I asked the DNR guy what was the one thing he'd like all of the land owners in our county to know. His answer was interesting but very telling. The meeting broke up around 8 p.m. I'm thinking I should have my own yearly ritual to celebrate Aldo Leopold Week. Making oatmeal cookies sounds like a great idea!
