Library was busy tonight. It had been closed for illness/cold on Monday & Tuesday but figured any backlog should have cleared by now. Patrons and updating statistics kept me busy until around 6 p.m. when visitors had gone home for supper and all of my data entry completed. Eventually there was nothing left to do so I walked into the librarian's office and grabbed another fistful of music CD's. The librarian had told me last week to pick a box of donations and go through it. Wouldn't you know that I'd pick a whole box of music. No one else seems to be working on it so I've been doing as many as I can when I have time. If the CD should be added to our collection I put a note to 'CIRC' and if it should go into the sale room I put a 'FRIENDS' tag on it. I add notes if any other library in our consortium carries it, how old it is, if it has something unique about it. Most of the CD's I picked up are from the 80's-90's. The librarian gave me a guideline stating anything older than 8 years should be sold unless there are extenuating circumstances. I put two CD's of Liszt and Mozart symphonies in the 'CIRC' pile. I don't care if they don't circulate - any music collection should have at least one CD by them. It would be similar to getting rid of the library's copy of Hamlet because it's old and it doesn't often get checked out. I told the librarian that if the Friend's are planning a spring sale it should be before St. Pat's day. There were a lot of CD's of Irish music. All of it I put in the 'FRIENDS' pile except one by the Chieftains. Only one other CD by the Chieftains in our connected library system and it's been recently checked out so it's active. I put that in the 'CIRC' pile. 'Mountain Trilogy' which is Native American flute music and another classic in my mind went along w/ it into the keep pile. I even kept a CD by Enya. I dislike her music but I could see that the one other CD by her in the system is actively used. In truth though I think everything donated should go into the Friend's Sale. The library would miss out on a few books (or in this example CD's) which would be nice to have but all sale proceeds go to the library to be used as the Library Board/Librarian consider best use. Might be a better way to cut down the backlog of books than leaving it to the whimsy of a volunteer like me.
