Leftovers for Breakfast
Whip alerted me to something going on outside. I went over to the window to see what she was excited about. In the meadow dark shapes were emerging from the edge of the woods: a small herd of deer - headed for neighborhood stands of corn. The sun had set but the state's Department of Natural Resources publishes the 'official' time when hunting ends each day. I checked the schedule and the deer had timed it fairly well - it was 20 minutes after the end of hunting for today. While the deer seemed to know the rules, I wondered about the hunters. Some aren't the brightest. The news reported a hunter in my state shot at what he thought was a deer. Turned out to be a dog. He didn't hit the dog but did shoot the woman walking the dog. (She was airlifted to hospital.) Both dog and woman were on her driveway. The news report ended with a DNR warden warning that even if a person isn't hunting, to wear bright colors during gun season. Everything about that story was surreal. Anyway, this herd of deer walking out from the forest was careful. They stopped and grazed my meadow until it was too dark for them to be seen at all before continuing on to the fine dining of the cornfields.
