Bergamot seed head

Library duty tonight.  A little girl asked if we had any Dick and Jane books.  We don't.  I told her we could order some for her but in little kid fashion she wanted something to read NOW.  Showed her to the Early Reading section and she picked over a dozen books to check out.  Her older brother (around 10 years old) asked where the mathematics books were located.  I showed him our junior math books but he asked if there were any more challenging.   Not a problem.  Took him over to the math area in the adult stacks.   Made sure he could reach the books and left him to the joys of perusing non-fiction.  Another girl of around 12 years of age asked if we had graphic novels.  Pre-teen is a difficult age - show her to the children's graphic novels or to the young adult graphic novels?  Took her to both locations and let her decide which were at her interest level.  A bill is making it's way through the state legislature to force librarians to inform parents which books their children check out.  One pro-legislator claimed it was an alternative to banning books as other states have tried. The official Republican line is it would alert parents to have conversations with their children about themes they feel their child isn't ready for.  Hard to believe anyone would think this bill is a good idea.  As a kid I was interested in all sorts of stuff and a voracious reader.  Am glad Dad and Mom took an interest in what I was up to but never forbade me from reading something.   I'm sure they were savvy enough to realize "forbidden fruit" just piques a kid's curiosity even more.
