Clouded Sulphur
I haven't seen many butterflies this year but did see this little sulphur on the walk today. It was flitting up the path ahead of me. I'd noticed in the past that the butterflies prefer the mowed paths on windy days. I assume the tall grass on either side keeps them from being buffeted by the breezes. Some sulphurs are hard to tell apart - Pink-Edged, Orange, Clouded. This one is a Clouded Sulphur. Surprised to see him since not only was it windy but the temps were in the low 50's and there aren't that many necter sources anymore: a few goldenrod flowers, a tansy, a couple of black-eyed susans. I think this kind of butterfly feeds on plants in the pea family and there are still alfalfa blossoms here and there despite the frosts we've had. They aren't known to overwinter as an adult so assume he was less interested in his next meal than in finding one last fling.
