The tall grass
Now that I've been to the fair it's time to get ready for autumn. That doesn't officially begin until September 23. Still it's common for people to consider Labor Day the beginning of Autumn. Winter doesn't begin until December 21 this year yet we all will consider it 'winter' as soon as the turkey dinner is digested. Summer will begin again June 20 next year but we will call it 'summer' starting on Memorial Day. Notice that there isn't really a date set for the beginning of spring. Yes, technically it occurs on March 19th next year. I can't think of a major holiday however that is around that timeframe. If we consider Easter THE spring holiday, that's not going to occur until March 31- well after the start of the season. That means to most people winter begins a month before the winter solstice and the season lingers on until Easter which is well after the vernal equinox. No wonder winter seems to last so long.
