Picking up Bales
Last day of the summer reading program at the library. Every Thursday in June thru July from 6-7 the kiddos would come to the library w/ their papers - signed by parents - that they had read or been read to if they weren't old enough yet. The children would spin the wheel for prizes, the library had an activity for them and a treat. Tonight was planned to be games in the parking lot, along w/ hotdogs and rootbeer floats. Plus, of course, giving out prizes to those children who had read the most books. It was still quite warm when I walked into the library at 4:00 but everyone was already scrambling to make new plans for the night. Large storms were due to come through the area just about the time we would be starting. The root beer floats and weiners were switched to the Village Hall auditorium and the outdoor games became indoor board games on tables set up in the back. Not as many children as usual - I assume many parents didn't want to be driving in the storm. Lots of rain, wind, and lightning but nothing more than that. Think the kids found it exciting. Every child there received some prize. Those who won something but didn't make it tonight have them waiting for pickup later in the week. The part I liked best though are the kids checking out books w/ their own library card. They are quite proud of that step of independence.
