Ouroboros
I needed to name the gator for multiple reasons. (1) I now have three motorized vehicles and although they are built for very different functions, naming at least one of them would quickly specify the one to which I was referring. (2) I'm learning the Norse myths but the names are difficult to remember. I do know the name of Thor's hammer and Odin's horse because I named the out-buildings after them. Here would be another chance to indelibly write a name on my brain. (3) It's just in my DNA to name stuff. My first thought was to call it Svadilfari. A giant built the walls around Asgard (home for the Norse gods) with the help of his unusually strong and swift work horse Svaldifari. The gator would be my work horse. However, the word "gator" niggled my brain. While there are neither alligator nor crocodiles in the northern territories of Europe, they did have a myth about a huge aquatic monster called Jormungandr that encircled the world's oceans. I couldn't make up my mind. Decided to e-mail the problem to my niece Becky. Becky probably wouldn't care what name was picked but her teenage son Ian is one of the few family members with some interest in mythology. He would have an opinion. Turned out their whole family lively debated it over a dinner and came back w/ Jormungandr. If you hear me referring to Jormungandr in the future it's the John Deere gator. I still have an issue remembering the name Svadilfari though. Hmmm... the lawnmower could use a name.

I like "Gator".
A lovely name to be sure. What did you christen it with?
