Library duty last night. As I settled into the desk chair one of the people at the computers came over to check out. It was Dave. I hadn't seen him on my shift for some time. He only knows me as a volunteer at the library and I only know him as someone who likes to sell items on the Internet and read James Patterson books. Still we greeted each other as old friends. The computer users all left fairly early and then Patti came in. I'd been told she would be running her card making class tonight. She had three students. I could hear them talking in the back area of the library where there are tables. Seemed to be having a great time. No books for me to pull or put away. No patrons at the moment. I decided a good time to make a new graph for the statistics I print out for the librarian and board. Gathered together the monthly attendance numbers back to 2017. The year 2020 numbers were incomplete and I dropped that year. Created a graph w/ months along the x-axis, attendance numbers on the y-axis, and each year graphed as a different color line. The years when we pushed summer reading program were almost bell curves - lower in the winter months and high in the summer. Pretty shocking how much lower the numbers were last year compared w/ the years before. Of course last year we had held most of the children reading activities outside during the summer and had suspended Lego Club which is a big favorite no matter the season. By the time I had incorporated the graph to automatically print out w/ the other graphs, it was 7 p.m. Walked over to the tables and let Patti know the library was closing. They all started cleaning up and Patti gave me one of the projects they had worked on that night. If you want to volunteer your time, there aren't many better places than your library.
