Christmas pageant at church this morning. The angel Gabriel was around 10 with dark rimmed glasses and the last of the Magi carried an x-box instead of myrrh. I rather enjoyed it. Then the pastor lit another Advent candle. Growing up Baptist we didn't talk about Advent. (I had the toughest time later in life remembering Advent was before Christmas and Lent was before Easter.) The pastor today talked about what the third Advent calendar meant. Had no idea there was a meaning behind each candle. Sounded a little like Kwanzaa which has a meaning for each of the seven candles. Got on-line and looked up Hannukkah to see if those nine candles had meanings behind each one. Couldn't find anything like that. Eight of the candles stood for days and the center candle was used to light the other candles. Though interesting there is a 'candle' ceremony in each of these holidays. Darkest and coldest time of the year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) - lighting candles as part of the holiday celebration makes a lot of sense.
