Ruby-throated Hummingbird (female)
The hummers are hungry. I brew up a quart of sugar water a day (4 cups water to 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil). Each feeder holds a pint and I have four of them out. Inevitably when 2 feeders are empty, the other 2 are down to half full. Sounds like the start to one of those math story problems, doesn't it? I assume the adults plus this year's fledglings are using the feeders as an additional source of food as they get ready for their migration in the fall. The males will leave sometime this month and start south for Mexico and Latin America. The females will stick around for another couple of weeks before taking off soon followed by juveniles. Therefore ... on the front of the sugar bag it states each teaspoon of sugar has 15 calories. How many calories are there in the nectar in all of the feeders after my daily filling?
