I had on my to-do list to cut down a white birch tree. I'd picked out one that had grown tall enough to poke up into my view of the horizon. It is just over the fenceline on my neighbor's side so I asked him first if it would be alright. Got an OK. Told my brothers and today the three of them were out by the basswood grove figuring out the best way of getting it down. My brothers teased me that I had caused a tree to be killed because it marred my vista but they brought back two loads of firewood for me which is what I really wanted. Green white birch won't burn - at least not easily. In a year the wood will have dried out enough and become excellent firewood. In the meantime, white birch stacked next to the fireplace will look quite nice.
