Lesser Yellowlegs
Despite frost in the mornings, spring won't be stopped. I put two hummingbird feeders out on Thursday morning and had a customer by Thursday afternoon. Was watching a hummer at the feeder this morning when I saw a deer walking across the meadow. Seemed odd to see a lone doe this late in the morning so I watched her make her way to the woods. That's when I noticed the disturbance in the grass in her wake. She had a tiny fawn following. Tonight I watched a group of deer in the meadow. A doe laid back her ears and chased off her fawn from last year. He seemed to think it was a game at first but finally let his mother go and stayed w/ another doe and a pair of yearlings. On the walk today I saw this bird at the gorge. Lesser Yellowlegs are just migrating through on their way to the upper regions of Canada to nest. My guess is frosty mornings don't bother them.
