Compton Tortoiseshell butterfly

My first butterfly for the year.  Pretty sure I know the species but sent the sighting off to a website for my state for verificon.  Doubt this butterfly just hatched - probably overwintered and came out today because it got above 50 degrees.   I found it flitting through the woods.  Not the usual place to find butterflies in the summer but this time of year it makes sense.  The trees don't have leaves yet so lots of sunlight to warm up in yet enough limbs and twigs to stop the wind so the butterfly isn't buffetted.   The only flowers blooming right now are in the woods.   Plus while there are more and more birds arriving they are flying around out in the fields and edges of the forest - not this deep in.  Anyway, pretty happy to see this little fella.  If the butterfly-website comes back that I was right in my identification, it's the first time I've seen one here.

Nice! Will have to watch the website. Is that same knowledgeable guy running it?
