Whip on top of snow

Between sublimation during the day and refreezing at night, The snowpack has developed a crust that allows me to walk easily on top of it (usually).  Hung the sheets on the line to dry this morning before Whip and I took off for a walk.  Since the very cold weather and last snowfall, we hadn't been taking long walks - just hiking around Gorgeous Gorge and back.    Today the crust on the snow seemed exceptionally sturdy so we took off  through the fields and up into the woods.  I tried to judge where the snow was strong enough to hold me and where I'd fall through.  Decided I couldn't tell from the look of the snow but could from the sound.  Before I got to where I'd break through, the snow would begin to sound hollow.  Also stayed away from snow drifts because the crust was never strong there.   Made for a good outing.   Tonight I'll crawl into a bed made w/ freshly washed and sun dried flannel sheets pre-warmed by an electric blanket.  Life just doesn't get much better than that.
