On the way home we walked through the old part of the forest. I saw a tree that had gone down recently. It was very windy today but nothing like the last two days. A broken stump remained and the revealed wood inside was bright white in color. I checked closer but saw no oozing sap. No, this tree had been dead for some time and the recent winds had been too much for it. The wind picked up again. That started the high keen of a deadman ... deadmen nearby. I looked up instinctively. A large falling deadman could kill you I suppose. There were none overhead but I saw a huge branch caught against a birch further into the woods. The two trees rubbed against each other and the live tree's limbs wailed from the stress. I went looking for the other one I heard. That was a tree that had broken about a foot off the ground but hadn't fallen down. Instead neighboring trees were cradling the trunk and the whole bunch screeched whenever the wind caused movement. I found four downed trees and one more deadman. A reminder to stay out of the woods on really windy days.
